A broad range where the winners and the dead weight are hard to tell apart.
Carrying a wide range is a reasonable strategy and it creates a specific problem, which is that averages stop meaning anything. When you sell across many different types of product, your overall margin is a blend of things that are doing very well and things that are quietly losing money, and the blend hides both.
Cash gets spread thin. A little money in a lot of lines feels safer than a lot of money in a few, but it makes each line harder to judge and makes the total tied up in stock surprisingly large.
Because the range is broad, seasonality gets muddled too. Different parts of the range peak at different times, so the overall chart looks flatter than any individual line actually is, which makes planning harder rather than easier.
