Costing your own time properly, which is the thing almost nobody does.
The defining mistake in handmade selling is not costing your own labour. People add up materials, add a bit, and call that the price. The hours vanish, which is why so many makers work constantly and end up with very little. If your time is not in the cost, the price is wrong.
Custom and made to order work makes this worse, because every piece takes a different amount of time and the awkward ones take far longer than you remember. Averaging hides the commissions that were genuinely bad deals.
Materials get bought in bulk and used gradually, so the spend and the usage never line up in a single month. Looking at cost of goods over a quarter or a year gives you a much truer picture than any individual month will.
