Fitment returns, huge SKU counts and stock that only fits one thing.
The defining problem in car parts is fitment. A part either fits the vehicle or it does not, and when it does not you get a return. Fitment returns are the biggest avoidable cost in the category and they are almost entirely a listing quality problem rather than a product problem.
SKU counts are enormous. Carrying parts for many models means holding a great deal of stock where each individual line sells rarely. That is a lot of cash spread very thin, and working out which lines actually justify their shelf space is genuinely hard without the numbers.
Parts also do not go out of fashion, they go out of relevance. When a model stops being on the road, its parts stop selling, slowly and without any obvious moment where it happened.
