How to cancel Squarespace
Cancel Squarespace online — site goes offline at billing end. Domain renews separately.
Online:
- Sign in at squarespace.com → click your site name → Settings (left sidebar) → Billing
- Click your subscription → Cancel Subscription
- Squarespace walks through retention offers (often 50% off for a year)
- Click Continue Cancellation through each → confirm. Site stays live until end of billing period.
Your site goes offline at billing end — pages aren't accessible, the URL serves a "site unavailable" page. Squarespace keeps your content in storage for 30 days after cancellation, so you can reactivate. After 30 days, deleted.
Export your content first:
- Settings → Advanced → Import & Export
- Click Export → choose WordPress export (.xml file). This includes posts, pages, images, comments. Doesn't include Commerce data or fonts/styles.
- Save the file. Even if you don't import to WordPress, the .xml is human-readable backup.
Domain renews separately. If you registered a domain through Squarespace, that's a separate subscription that auto-renews even if you cancel the site. Either:
- Cancel the domain too (Settings → Domains → manage → Cancel/Disable Auto-renew), OR
- Transfer the domain to a cheaper registrar (Cloudflare, Porkbun) before it renews
Annual refund: Squarespace refunds annual plans within 14 days of payment, full refund. Outside that window, no refund.
Cheaper alternatives: Webflow (free tier), Carrd ($19/year), Framer (free tier), GitHub Pages (free, static sites only), Notion sites + a domain ($5/mo total).
