How to cancel Slack Pro / Business+
Cancel Slack Pro online — only workspace owners can. Downgrading to Free hides messages older than 90 days.
Online — must be Workspace Primary Owner:
- Sign in to Slack → click your workspace name (top left) → Settings & administration → Workspace settings
- Click Billing (top right)
- Click Cancel Subscription
- Slack offers retention deals (often 25% off). Click Continue to skip.
- Confirm. Downgrade happens at end of billing period.
FREE TIER HIDES OLD MESSAGES. This is the big surprise. Slack Free only shows the last 90 days of message history. Older messages aren't deleted — they're just hidden — but you can't search or read them on the Free tier. If you resubscribe later, all messages reappear.
Before downgrading:
- Export important conversations — Workspace owners can export the workspace's message history from Settings → Import/Export Data
- Save key files — pinned files in important channels should be downloaded
- Document where things live — once history is hidden, finding "that decision we made about X in March" requires the export
Channel limits on Free:
- Unlimited channels still work
- App integrations are limited to 10
- Group huddles limited to 1-on-1 only (no group calls)
Plan tiers: Pro ($8.75/user/mo) → Business+ ($15) → Enterprise+ (custom). If you only need the message history but not the Business+ features (SAML SSO, data residency), downgrade to Pro instead of cancelling.
Annual refund: Slack refunds annual subscriptions within 30 days of payment, full refund. Email feedback@slack.com.
