How to cancel Planet Fitness
Cancel Planet Fitness in person or by mail — phone and online aren't accepted. Plan for 30+ minutes.
Planet Fitness deliberately makes cancellation hard. Their policy: cancel in person at your home club, or by certified mail. Phone, email, and online are not accepted. Bring photo ID.
In person (faster):
- Go to your home club (the one you signed up at) — NOT just any Planet Fitness
- Bring a photo ID
- Ask for the cancellation form. Fill it out and submit
- Get a copy of the signed form for your records — this is important if they dispute later
- Watch your bank statement for 60 days. PF has a track record of "accidentally" continuing to bill after cancellation. If they do, dispute via your bank.
By certified mail (if you've moved):
Address: Your home Planet Fitness club's exact address (NOT a corporate address). Write a letter stating you want to cancel, include your name, member number, and address. Send via certified mail with return receipt — you need proof of delivery.
Annual fee gotcha: Even if you cancel, if your annual fee ($49) is within the 30-day billing window, it'll process. Time your cancellation to be 5+ days after the annual fee posts to avoid this.
Contract terms: If you signed a 12-month commitment, you may owe the remaining months unless you cancel for one of the allowed reasons (moved >25 miles from any PF, medical condition with a doctor's note, military deployment). Don't agree to a 12-month plan again — opt for the no-commitment month-to-month.
Why so hard? Gym churn is a known business problem — Planet Fitness is famous for making it inconvenient on purpose. Plan a deliberate Saturday trip to handle it; don't expect a 5-minute fix.
