How to cancel 1Password
Cancel 1Password online in 3 minutes. Export your vault BEFORE cancelling — read access ends at billing date.
EXPORT YOUR PASSWORDS FIRST. This is non-negotiable. Once your subscription ends, you can't read your own vault unless you re-subscribe.
Step 1 — Export the vault:
- Open the 1Password desktop app (not the web version)
- File menu → Export → All Items
- Save as a .1pux file (preserves attachments, structured data) AND a .csv (for emergency restoration in another tool)
- Store the export in an encrypted file (use macOS Disk Utility's encrypted DMG, or Windows BitLocker, or a tool like Cryptomator)
Step 2 — Migrate to a new password manager. Free options:
- Bitwarden (the most popular 1Password alternative, has a free tier with unlimited passwords)
- iCloud Keychain (free for Apple users — built in)
- Browser password managers (Chrome, Firefox) — fine for most use cases
Step 3 — Cancel 1Password:
- Sign in at start.1password.com → click the workspace name (top right)
- Go to Settings → Billing → Cancel Subscription
- Click End Subscription
Family/Team plans: Cancellation cancels access for everyone. Notify family members so they can migrate their own data.
Refunds: 1Password offers prorated refunds for annual subscriptions cancelled within 60 days of renewal. Email support@1password.com to request.
