How to cancel The New York Times
Cancel NYT online or by phone. Online tries to save you with a retention offer first — accept it if you're price-sensitive.
Online (you'll see retention offers):
- Sign in at nytimes.com → click your initials (top right) → My Account
- Click Manage Subscription → Cancel Subscription
- NYT shows several screens of retention offers — typically 50-75% off for 12 months, sometimes free access to specific products
- To actually cancel, scroll past each retention offer to Continue to Cancel
- Final confirmation. Access continues until the end of your billing period.
By phone (often faster + better deals): Call 1-800-591-9233 Mon-Fri 7am-10pm ET, weekends 7am-3pm ET. Tell the rep you want to cancel because the price has gone up. The retention scripts they have for phone are usually better than the website offers — expect at least 50% off for a year.
The retention math is real. The NYT regularly extends $5/month deals to people who threaten to cancel. If you'd pay $5/month, just call and ask — many users get this every renewal cycle.
Bundle vs standalone: All Access bundle includes Cooking, Games, Athletic, Wirecutter. If you're cancelling but use one of these specifically, downgrade to that single product instead — they're $5/month each.
