How to cancel Microsoft 365

Online:

1. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services (use the Microsoft account that owns the subscription)
2. Find Microsoft 365 → click Manage → Cancel subscription
3. Microsoft offers to pause or switch plans — accept if useful
4. Click Continue Cancellation → confirm

Annual plans get refunded. Microsoft prorates: if you paid $99 for a year and cancel after 3 months, you get ~$74 back. This is generous compared to most software companies — actually use it.

Monthly plans: No refund. Access continues to the end of the current month.

Free alternatives if you mainly used Word/Excel:

• Microsoft 365 Online — same apps, browser-only, free with any Microsoft account
• Google Workspace — free Docs/Sheets, fully compatible with .docx/.xlsx
• LibreOffice — open-source, runs locally, no account needed

Family plan loophole: $99.99/year covers 6 people. Splitting with 5 family or housemates is $16.67/year each — cheaper than almost any other option.
