How to cancel GitHub Copilot

Online:

1. Sign in at github.com → click your profile (top right) → Settings
2. Left sidebar → Billing and plans → Plans and usage
3. Find Copilot → Cancel Subscription
4. Confirm. Access continues until billing date.

For organizations / enterprise: Org admins manage Copilot under the org's Settings → Copilot → Access. Cancellation is per-seat from there. Individual users on org accounts can't cancel themselves.

Annual refund: GitHub refunds annual Copilot subscriptions if cancelled within 30 days of payment. Outside that, you finish out the year.

Copilot Free: GitHub launched a free tier in late 2024 — 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month. Sufficient for solo learners or part-time devs. If your usage is light, the free tier might cover you.

Verified student discount: GitHub Education gives Copilot Pro free to students. If you have any current student status (community college course, online learning program with a .edu), apply at education.github.com.

Verified open-source maintainer discount: Maintainers of "popular open-source projects" (GitHub's discretion, usually 1000+ stars) get Copilot Pro free. Apply at github.com/orgs/community/discussions.

Cursor / Continue.dev alternatives: Cursor is a popular paid alternative; Continue.dev is open-source and free if you bring your own LLM API key (Anthropic, OpenAI, local Ollama).
