How to cancel Duolingo Super / Max

Cancel Duolingo Super online or via app store. The free tier is still very capable — losing Super doesn't end your streak.

Where you cancel depends on where you bought it.

iOS: Settings → tap your name → SubscriptionsDuolingoCancel Subscription.

Android: Google Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptionsSubscriptionsDuolingoCancel.

Web (duolingo.com): Sign in → click profile (bottom-left) → SettingsSubscriptionCancel Subscription.

Your streak survives. Cancelling Super (or the higher Max tier) drops you to the free Duolingo tier. You keep your streak, XP, achievements, friends, and all language progress. You just see ads, lose unlimited hearts, and lose offline access.

Free tier is actually fine for most learners. The free version has the same lessons. The biggest practical differences:

  • Hearts (lives): Free tier loses a heart per wrong answer; Super has unlimited
  • Ads: Free has them between lessons; Super removes them
  • Mistake Review: Super-only feature; review your past mistakes specifically
  • No streak freezes: Free has limited streak freezes; Super has unlimited

If you don't care about hearts (you learn from mistakes anyway) or ads, free is genuinely sufficient.

Family Plan: $119.99/year for up to 6 accounts (~$20/person if fully shared). Cheaper than 2 individual subs.

Annual refund: Duolingo refunds annual subscriptions within 14 days of payment, full refund. After that, no refund — you finish out the year.

Free trial gotcha: Duolingo's "free 14-day Super trial" auto-converts to paid. Cancel by day 12 (leave buffer) to avoid the charge — you keep Super for the rest of the trial after cancelling.
